Representation of Teen in the Media

Name of Media Text
It represents teens as . . .
It is accurate/inaccurate because . . .
Symbols and signs
Gossip Girl Print Advertisement
High class, private school kids who socialize every night. They carry with themselves drama between each other. The girls are portrayed as provocative girls, and mature men.

It is inaccurate because only a small amount of high school students go private school, especially in high class cities, such as New York. They dress fancy, and buy expensive things. These students do not represent the majority of teenage lives.
-          Fancy clothing, private school (wealth)
-          Power (high status in the school)
-          New York (where everybody is; the life is busy and fun)
-          The characters are portrayed as teenagers, but they act very mature for the age they are supposed to represent.
-          Attractive
Miley Cyrus video – Can’t Be Tamed
Teenagers, both guys and girls are portrayed to be seductive and promiscuous by the clothes they were and they way they dance.  The fact the video is by Miley Cyrus, who is one of the most popular celebrity teenagers at the moment, she portrays people her age as rebellious, and wild, who cannot ‘be tamed’.
It is both accurate and inaccurate because teenagers have that desire to be free, and they tend to rebel against their parent’s wishes. The inaccuracy is that not all teenagers would dress like that, and act as provocative as she portrays them to be.
-          The dancers are dressed as birds which represent freedom
-          The cage represents the feeling of being trapped in a place where you don’t want to be

-          Student plan, guy has plan, girl uses his phone
Being connected by their cell phones is really important to them. The fact that the girl wants to use the guy’s phone because he has a specific phone plan.
This is a very accurate advertisement because teens are attached to their cell phones all the time. The advertisement shows that somebody is calling for the girl on the guy’s phone, which also represents some type of social class.
-          Cell phones  (represent socializing because teenagers feel the need to always be connected)
-          Social class, wealth (most teenagers have a cell phone; if you don’t you are perceived to be poor or the odd one out)

Secret Life of the American Teenager television ad http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyHsmaDp240
As living the all-American dream, but we see all the little flaws. Unplanned pregnancies, a love triangle, cat-fights. From an outsider’s perspective you would see good looking teenagers, but by watching the show you realize that one of the girls is a mom, one guy is hopelessly in love, the father of the baby is dating the sister of the mother of his baby, and so on.
It is accurate in the sense that all teenagers go through trials and tribulations. When you are expected to lead a certain type of lifestyle, you choose to lead it or leave it. The situations these teens face portray teens as naïve to their surroundings. Many also give in to peer pressure, which is a realistic portrayal of what occurs in a teenager’s life in today’s society
-          Physical appearance – the girl is called out by the guy for not hiding herself, and showing off her assets after her pregnancy
-          Good-looking; middle – high class representations of characters
-          Wealth to carry on supporting the baby, while still going to school
High School Musical (the movie)
Very joyful, energetic, problem-free teenagers who get along with each other in one way or another. They sing, they dance, they are smart and play sports – all are represented as multi-talented, and living the all-American dream. It also portrays the mean girl, the popular guy, the geek, the drama dweebs, and the cute couple.
-          Accurate in portraying the social classes of a high school
-          Although it was the main point to be a very energetic, lively movie, not many high schools are like that. Most people stay within their social groups, which determine what activities they are involved with
-          Wealth – to play sports, and live in big houses, you need money to make it a reality
-          Sports – being a big athlete creates power and popularity, which many teens desire
-          Nice clothing, attractive characters

I would like to create an advertisement for cell phone use by teenagers. It would be a television advertisement, much like the Rogers commercial used in my chart. It shows how teenagers love to stay connected and be connected at all times. My commercial would take place at first in a quiet environment with a few teenagers socializing, it would then evolve to another environment, and by the end the commercial will be set at a party with many teens having a good time (this being the desire to be where everybody is at, and enjoying it as you please). These environments represent places where teenagers can relate to. The whole idea of the advertisement would be to have characters all connecting with each other, by texting, talking about how their night is going - this keeps them connected, especially since they are not all together experiencing the same things. As the audience, the desire to be able to connect with anybody at any time is what is being portrayed as a value message in the commercial. The cell phone itself would catch the eye of a teenager; then looking at the situation as a whole, the targeted audience would somehow relate to what was going on during the commercial.
